Tendulkar is not as scared as Sehwag: Muraleedharan
Mumbai: Legendary Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has said that the most feared bowlers in his international career were Virender Sehwag and West Indies’ Brian Lara. Though batting is legendary, he is not afraid to bowl against Sachin Tendulkar. Muraleedharan pointed out that he had never been hurt like Virender Sehwag. In an interview with Cricinfo, Muraleedharan said that he was more afraid of Sehwag than Tendulkar.
India’s Virender Sehwag is one of the best openers in world cricket. He has three triple centuries in Tests and has created a unique style in Test openings. Rahul Dravid played in the opposite style. Sri Lanka’s legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has revealed that Sehwag missed a triple century after hearing Dravid’s words during a Test match.
The incident took place during a 2009 tour of Sri Lanka to India. Sehwag, who went to listen to Rahul Dravid’s ‘advice’ in the third Test of the series, missed his third triple century of his career. In the third Test in Mumbai, Sehwag lost his triple century by just seven runs.
Sri Lanka were all out for 393 in the first innings. Sehwag’s triple century helped India declare the first innings at 726 for nine. Dhoni also scored a century that day. India beat Sri Lanka by 309 runs in the second innings and won by an innings and 24 runs. Murali also revealed that there were not many batsmen who read his bowling style like Sehwag.
Muttiah Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker in international cricket. Muraleedharan is the only bowler to reach 800 wickets in Tests. Muraleedharan is the only bowler to reach exactly 800 wickets in 133 Tests. Murali has taken exactly 800 wickets in 133 Tests. He also took 534 wickets in 350 ODIs. Muraleedharan retired from international cricket in 2010. He is currently the bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL). ‘I was never afraid to bowl against Tendulkar. Because he will not hurt us like Sehwag. But he should be afraid to bowl against Sehwag. I am the one who suffered the pain his bat inflicted. Tendulkar is back. He will not hurt us. But it is difficult to get out, ”Muraleedharan said. Muraleedharan said Sehwag’s style was to score fast no matter what the situation. Therefore, Muraleedharan recalled that the fielding was arranged based on the defense against Sehwag. ‘The fielding arrangement was defensive against Sehwag. Because it was clear that Sehwag would attack if he got any ball.
Sehwag is not like Lara. No respect for bowlers. Sehwag was confident that there would be no challenge if he was in form. That is why Sehwag will wait to make a mistake by pulling the field to the defense, ”Muraleedharan said. Sehwag was adamant that he should score at least 150 runs in two hours at the crease, even in Tests. So even if you go out before lunch, you will see Sehwag scoring at least 150 runs, ”Muraleedharan recalled. Muraleedharan said that as a batsman, Tendulkar was more careful not to take wickets against him. He said it was therefore a daunting task to oust Tendulkar.
‘Sehwag knew exactly where I was going to bowl. Sehwag says he did not understand my bowling. But Sehwag is the player who has played more diverse shots against me than anyone else. Sehwag was a very dangerous batsman. I have said this many times, ”Muraleedharan said.
